This time around I have a more well known spirit, but it’s one I’m in love with. The Sexton is an amazing single malt Irish whiskey from the folks over at Bushmills and is easily one of my favourites!

Bottled at 40% ABV, this whiskey really sets itself apart immediately just from the beautiful design of the bottle! The copperplate gothic aesthetic is gorgeous and super unique, making it very easy to spot on a shelf in the store, or on a bar if I’m looking for a good drink while out at a social gathering!
The aroma is initially very chocolatey, somewhat akin to many VS cognacs, but goes on to develop into far more complex malty/honeycomb concoction with a very distinct alcohol burn. When drinking, it has a powerful, punchy initial malt flavour upfront, though a contrastingly gentle mouthfeel, which I found interesting. There is certainly a slight acidity in the undertones, likely thanks to the Sherry Casks used to age it. When swallowing it has an intense burn that gravitates towards the tongue and top of the throat.

One thing I personally very much enjoy about this is that it’s such a Swiss Army knife of a whiskey; it works beauty neat, as I just described, but it also works well with a simple mixer, keeping the same flavour with a more mild touch, and finally works great in cocktails too! That last one of course needs a bit of nuance, as this is an admittedly powerful whiskey, but it can absolutely work well in both long and short cocktails that rely on strong flavours!
I adore this whiskey in more ways than one, and am so happy it’s a pretty affordable whiskey for as good as it tastes! My huge compliments to Alex Thomas, the master blender of The Sexton, for this amazing whiskey, though I’m sure she’s used to hearing praise for this dram!

Back again with a nice niché spirit I’ve found in the form of Quaglia I Classici Italiani Amaretto. This a beautiful little bottle made by Italians, for Italians, and it really shows in the taste! I happened to pick this up on a whim at a spirit specialist store when I was on a trip recently, and I’m really glad I did.
